Infacol® Q&A: Could It Be Colic?

Published in March 2008

I am a first time mum and am starting to really worry about my new baby. She is only four weeks old and is normally happy and healthy but has recently started crying for hours on end (particularly in the evening) for no apparent reason. I have tried comforting her and checked if she needs changing or feeding but nothing seems to help! I was prepared for our new arrival to cry but not like this and it is very distressing when she pulls her knees up to her chest and cries and cries. What can I do to help our little girl?

It is a natural instinct for parents to worry about the health of their baby and persistent crying can be alarming. Based on your description this sounds like it could be colic. However, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional such as your Health Visitor, as they will be able to diagnose if it is colic and provide advice on treatment.

Despite medical research no one is quite sure what exactly causes colic but small bubbles of trapped wind that build up in the bowel could be a likely explanation. It is also defined as unexplained crying for more than three hours a day, for at least three days a week, for at least three weeks. Colic usually occurs in very young babies and can last up to 3-4 months when the problem usually resolves itself.

There are a number of ways you could try and soothe your baby:

  • Letting them suck on your clean finger will distract as well as comforting them.
  • Take them out in their pram or walk with them whilst they are in a sling- you could even go for a drive as the motion can be soothing.
  • Pressure can build up from air swallowed during feeding so make sure you take the time to wind your baby thoroughly before and after feeding.
  • Also, try Infacol® (contains simeticone)!
