Babywearing Ballet

So, you know how you’d love to fit some sort of exercise into your daily routine but your sweet baby takes up all of your time (as babies do)? Well, there’s a new craze that has hit the states, and it’s called ‘babywearing ballet – and just as the name suggests; you do ballet whilst wearing your baby.

The babywearing ballet classes are the brainchild of Morgan Castner, ballet dancer and mum of two. Castner explains that she loves ballet, she loves babywearing and so babywearing ballet was a natural progression. The main point of the class, rather than trimming away all that post preggy weight, is mum-child bonding.

One of the quotes on the babywearing ballet website (http://www.babywearingballet.com/) reads:

“It’s only natural that dancing calms babies. Their whole uterine existence was a moving experience. Babies crave movement after birth because to them it is the norm. Being still disconcerts babies. They don’t understand it and it frightens them.” – Dr William Sears, MD.

In other words; babies will love it!

The classes are an hour long and are designed to help new mums strengthen, tone and stretch their bodies while strengthening their bond with their new baby. Castner’s post-natal fitness class focuses on the proper technique required to lengthen and strengthen muscles while emphasising proper posture for both ballet and babywearing. Classes begin by warming up at the barre with plies, tendus and desages and move to centre floor work, including upper body port de bras, positions and choreography. And babs is worn the entire time.

As far as baby carriers go, they need to be comfy, ideally allowing a tummy to tummy hold or a back carry (rather than forward facing or cradle hold positioning).

Of course, it’s kind of annoying that this only happens in America. That said; what’s stopping you – all you babywearing, ballet loving mums! Set something up! – There are guaranteed to be loads of mommas who want to tone their tums baby in tow!
