Could the IKEA Baby Name Trend Catch On?

Who doesn’t love a good stockpile of IKEA non-essentials and impossible-to-construct furnishings?

Irony aside, most of us really do have a soft spot for the affordable and trendy Scandi brand—but do we heart it enough to name our offspring after it? Apparently, yes.

According to mum blogger ‘LucyBC’ the homeware superstore has an entire catalogue of baby name inspo—from their catalogue, of course:

  • Malm
  • Tarva
  • Ingo
  • Cilla
  • Franklin
  • Tobias
  • Stefan
  • Ivar
  • Tobias
  • Stig
  • Fredde
  • Sommar
  • Norna
  • Malinda
  • Elly
  • Henrika
  • Johanne
  • Mata
  • Mydal

If you recognise any of the monikers, it’s probably because you have the shelving unit namesake, or vegetable peeler.

Of course, most of the names existed before IKEA ever did—but, like the world before the wheel, who remembers that?

The names are admittedly catchy and cute—some even beautiful; and naming trends do tend to pilfer their muse from pop culture…so why not? (If you can handle your child being synonymous with cheap chipboard, that is.)

And if you still love the idea of an IKEA name for your babe but aren’t sure if you can pull it off, assuage your concern with this mum’s own take on the iffy baby name phenomenon: “I have two children – 34 and 32. We didn’t like any names at the time so named them after the menu numbers of our favourite meals in the local Chinese.”
