With Fathers’ Day just around the corner, it seems Nature has conspired to provide the world with an image that encapsulates what it means to be a dad: braving danger, holding down the fort – and keeping the backyard in check.
Earlier this month, Cecilia Wessels of Alberta, Canada, shot this pic of her husband taking care of his turf while a tornado surged just a couple miles behind.
Posting the snap above on Facebook, Wessels captioned: “My beast mowing the lawn with a breeze in his hair.” The double force of nature photo has been shared over 3,000 times, and of course, there’s many a sceptic questioning its authenticity; to which the “beast’s” wife responds (with nonchalant aplomb evidently shared by her twister-defying husband): “Real, my dear.”
Wessels explains that it was their 9- year-old daughter who initially spotted her dad mowing mid-tornado storm. When Wessels went outside, dad replied simply: “Everything is okay.”
“Seeing him out there didn’t faze me,” Wessels says. “I know him to be a man of good judgment and he looked calm and in control, so I was actually way more fascinated with the tornado. Seeing that for the first time was exhilarating and beautiful. Tornadoes are beautiful and fearful all rolled into one.”
Five minutes after taking the photo, the tornado was gone — “He saw the tornado form in the distance when he started mowing the lawn, and kept tracking it as it moved eastward past us about 2-3 km away,” says Wessels.
Turns out Dad had some handy knowledge of the natural phenomenon, had assessed the danger, and got the garden sorted.
As dads do.
