How many nappies does a newborn need?

One of the (many) things mums and dads will be keen to stock up on before their babs is born is nappies. And word has it that newborns go through nappies at a rate of knots.

So what’s the truth?

How many nappies should you buy pre-birth? How many nappies does a newborn need?

The general rule of thumb is that newborns go through about 8 nappies a day – the more they feed, the more they poo (which is generally when you change them)! The ‘8 a day’ thing is worked out according to a usual feeding schedule of every 2-3 hours in those first few weeks; so if you are feeding more regularly, expect to use more nappies.

If you do the maths, you could easily use 56 nappies in a week.

But before you run out a buy a whole shop of size 1s (newborn size), also remember that babies grow really fast. And depending on the size of your babs when he is born and how fast he grows thereafter… it’s impossible to know how long one size nappy will last. Usually average-sized babies, sitting pretty on or around the 50th centile, will last in size 1 nappies for about a month.

So, it’s probably a good idea to buy enough nappies a week at least, probably even two weeks – by then you’ll probably have your mind wrapped around the whole nappy thing – how many your baby is using and what size is best suited – and will be confident in your forthcoming purchases.

Also – if you’re worried about the (size 1) newborn nappy possibly being too big, don’t. As long as babs has something for you to wrap his bottom in, he’ll be fine; if you have a few leaky nappies just send dad (or granny) off to buy a pack (or two) of preemie disposables, or you might want to use cloth nappies until babs fleshes out a bit.

If the nappies do leak it could also be the fit nappy itself rather than your babs being too small for it, in which case you might have to try a few brands until you find one that works best for you.

But the occurrence of the two aforementioned points is spontaneous – as are many things when it comes to parenting – and planning for, never mind foreseeing, every potential nappy related will just make you crazy and broke.

Choose a brand (speak to your mummy friends, or just guess), buy nappies for a week or two, go with the flow and praise Heaven for the blessing of online shopping.

How many nappies did your newborn baby use – and how did you prepare? Any advice for the mums-to-be out there?
