One way to get your little one stoked on music is with BabyBoomBoom’s Junior Band-Bag, which contains a multi-lingual music CD and four musical instruments.
The CD features nursery rhymes and songs in English and a second language of your choice, Stimulate baby with music with an aim to familiarise your little one with other languages.
There are eight available languages to choose from including, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Polish, Welsh, Chinese Mandarin and Scottish Gaelic.
What’s great about the song is that children often learn words (and sentences) because they are ‘spoken’ in tune. Repetition and rhyme also encourage speech, irrespective of language. Each verse on the BabyBoomBoom CD is sung in English then repeated in the second language. Songs featured on the CD are:
- Old MacDonald
- Five Little Ducks
- The Mulberry Bush
- Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
- This Little Piggy
- Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
- Itzy Bitzy Spider
- Round and Round the Garden
- Tommy Thumb
- The Alphabet Song
- Brother John
- The Wheels on the Bus
- London Bridge
- If you’re happy and you know it
And your child can rock out to Old MacDonald with a tambourine, a recorder, a castanet and a maraca.
The Junior Band-Bag is recommended for children from 3 years (but is tested on babies from 10+ months). I however, have been playing Nursery Rhymes (and all sorts of music) to my girls from the day they were born.
My nine-month old loves bashing on the tambourine and has been playing with a maraca since she has been able to grasp. The recorder is definitely too advanced for a baby but there’s no harm in letting them have a little feel and showing them how to use it when they’re a bit older.
