I remember being pregnant –twice – and for the first trimester – both times – I think I was asleep on the couch by 8 o’clock every night… for 8 or so weeks. The tiredness during pregnancy was totally ridiculous.
I was also tired by lunch time and wishing I could put my head on my desk and sleep for the rest of the day. I am sure I did a lot of ‘sleeping with my eyes open’ aka staring vacantly at my computer screen.
This exhaustion didn’t last longer than the first trimester, after which I was back to my usual late night excursions.
But why the tiredness during pregnancy?
Babycenter.com offers the following reasons:
- Change in hormones – raised progesterone levels in particular.
- Nausea and vomiting is tiring.
- Waking up to pee (all the time) at night disrupts sleep, provoking fatigue.
- Feeling anxious about the pregnancy… is also tiring.
The exhaustion usually passes but in the meantime, take a cat nap where you can and keep positive! A good attitude goes a long way to combating the onset of sleep.
How did you combat first trimester tiredness during pregnancy? Any useful tips?
